Grammar Schools in Wirral

Four Wirral grammar schools — Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby Grammar School, Wirral Grammar School for Boys and Wirral Grammar School for Girls — share one entrance assessment, coordinated through Wirral Council's admissions process but administered by an external test provider (Quest Assessments from the September 2026 test, for September 2027 entry onward; GL Assessment previously) covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics, with scores standardised for age. The Council itself sets no single qualifying number: it only removes a selective-school preference from an application if a child does not reach "the standard for entry," leaving each school, as its own admission authority, to decide and apply that standard when ranking applicants and to publish its own admissions criteria for what happens if it is oversubscribed (typically distance from the school once the standard is met). As with several other ranking-based areas, reaching whatever standard is set in a given year only makes a child eligible to be considered, not guaranteed a place.
