Grammar Schools in Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire's 13 grammar schools jointly run one shared test — the Secondary Transfer Test, set and marked by GL Assessment — rather than each school setting its own. A child sits papers covering verbal, mathematical and non-verbal skills; each is converted to a standardised score, then combined into one weighted total (50% verbal, 25% mathematical, 25% non-verbal) called the STTS. Reaching 121 makes a child "qualified" for any Buckinghamshire grammar school. Unusually, Buckinghamshire Council states explicitly that a higher score does not give a child higher priority: once qualified, the STTS itself plays no further part, and each grammar school (as its own admission authority) allocates places among qualified applicants using its own published oversubscription criteria instead, such as distance or siblings.
