The three mastery stages
A word's stage is stored per student, per word, so the same word can be "new" for one child and "mastered" for another.
How the review schedule adapts, word by word
Every word carries its own stage, starting at 0. A correct answer moves it up one stage and reschedules its next review 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 21 or 28 days out depending which stage it's reached, so a word answered correctly several times running waits far longer before resurfacing than one just met for the first time.
A wrong answer resets that word straight back to stage 0, whatever stage it had reached, even a word already marked mastered. There's no partial credit for having known it once. Once a word truly reaches the top of the ladder, it's still checked in on every 14 days rather than considered "done".
